A collaboratory, as defined by William Wulf in 1989, is a “center without walls, in which the nation’s researchers can perform their research without regard to physical location, interacting with colleagues, accessing instrumentation, sharing data and computational resources, and accessing information in digital libraries ” (Wulf, 1989). The Social Data Collaboratory (SDC) uses social media and data science to inform decisions. Main Content The internet and social media have redefined how we search for, are exposed to, produce and share knowledge and ideas.
Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders
for a Data Rich World
Collaboratory Riverside is committed to helping start up social enterprises grow their community based initiatives. Offering a co-working space overlooking Parramatta River, Collaboratory provides a knowledge sharing environment with access to a support framework that will help connect you with the social enterprise community.
What is the Collaboratory?
Co-founded by Columbia Entrepreneurship and the Data Science Institute, the Collaboratory supports the development of innovative, interdisciplinary curricula that embeds data or computational science into more traditional domains or the reverse, embeds business, policy, cultural, and ethical topics into the context of a data or computer science curriculum.
The Collaboratory at Columbia has at its core mission the integration of data and computer science into the context of other domains of instruction and research across the University. Examples of the ‘need case’ include the imperative for MBA’s to have a fundamental understanding of predictive analytics; for undergraduates to appreciate the nuances of data collection and parsing and the frailty of the narratives that may be built around data which may be purposely or innocently biased, incomplete, or tainted; and researchers and practitioners in health care to be able to utilize the incredibly powerful databases of billions of individual (anonymized) health records to better understand disease and interventions.
Within the Collaboratory, the Collaboratory Fellows Fund provides incentives and resources to teams of faculty (one with data science expertise, the other with domain area expertise) to create new curricula, beta test it, and then teach it within their schools/departments as a regular offering within the course catalog.
The Collaboratory has spawned a staggering number of new courses over a very short period; since 2016 the program has seen the creation of 32 new Collaboratory classes across more than 11 Columbia schools. To date, more than 6,000 students – graduate students and undergrads – have taken at least one of the classes.
Why Data Science and Interdisciplinary Literacy?
The increasing availability of data and computational power in society is impacting our world in profound ways. As our ability to generate, store and analyze data grows by the day, so do the opportunities for using those data to improve our economy, our security, the environment and human health.
Scores of professional and research areas are increasingly becoming data driven enterprises, and with this transformation comes a growing need for education that provides universal data and computational literacy. In order to be effective, the leaders of tomorrow, whether they pursue careers in academia, government, business, industry or other avenues, will need to understand how data and>tomorrow’s graduates to meaningfully engage in today’s data-rich world will vary by academic background and discipline. Students in Columbia’s Professional Schools will have different needs than undergraduates following the core-curriculum, for example, and needs will also vary between the Professional Schools themselves.

In August 2018 the Collaboratory hosted an invitation-only “Subsurface Energy Roundtable” that included topics related to oil and gas exploration, geothermal energy, geologic sequestration, new applications for subsurface energy, methane emissions and other topics. The discussion included participants from industry, academia, and the U.S. Department of Energy. This roundtable discussion brought together a wide range of perspectives to help identify potentially transformational technology opportunities, as well as the thought leaders in industry and academia who could launch new R&D programs to unlock these opportunities.
Game-changing investments positioning Colorado to power the nation
The four Collaboratory institutions have spun out 90+ new companies and acquired 540+ new technology licenses since 2007. Colorado is #3 in U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E investments nationally which has been a fast-track to commercialization. The four institutions have $500 million in investments in facilities and strategic hiring of entrepreneurial research.

Since 2007, the Colorado Energy Research Collaboratory (Collaboratory) is a uniquely Colorado partnership. The Collaboratory has been a successful and impactful research consortium among four leading research institutions—the Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, University of Colorado-Boulder, and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Our impact and exceptional record of research and education can be read in our economic impact report.

Our research areas support a diversified energy portfolio in advanced energy technologies in oil and gas, sustainable energy, microgrid, battery, advanced cooling, gas to liquid, and increased energy efficiency — to name a few.
The Collaboratory works with industry partners, public agencies, and other universities and colleges to transform our energy future. We do this by:
- Use our world-class researchers and state-wide facilities to expand our national leadership in energy research collaborations
- Leverage partnerships to transform research innovation into commercial impact
- Developing technologies that make “all of the above” energy exploration and production more effective and cheaper
- Training the next-gen workforce through education, company/job creating technologies and intellectual property
- Boosting the nation’s energy ecosystem through research partnerships with industry, foundations, and government

Attend the 9th annual energy transition symposium!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Collaboratory rescheduled the 9th annual energy transition symposium until May 4-5 and 14, 2021. Originally planned for April 28-29, 2020 we had to be resilient and flexible. You can attend some or all of the three day event — due to the uncertainty of hosting large in-person events, this year will be 100% virtual!
